We had the pleasure to speak with Liva, one of the founding members of March17 and asked her about the motivation that sparked the idea for the brand.
“Love for jewelry and accessories. I like to have something unique and special, but at the same time casual and simple. And I believe there are many other ladies who are looking for the same or something similar. So I came up with March17 – a brand that would offer simple, nice and at the same time classy and sexy accessories.”
When we discussed the challenges of creating a startup, and specifically what it was like to handmake the products, Liva explained what her experience has ben like and how she has been able to manage her life accordingly.
” Oh, there have been and still are quite a few. First of all, we had some technical issues. We tried at least 5 different kinds of glue until we found the one that would hold together a glass marble and a metal hook. That might seem an easy one (we thought the same), but, oh, how frustrating it was! There were costumers who received our items and in the humidity we have here in Shenzhen, the jewelry just fell apart.. Everyone who contacted us, got a replacement sent out right away, as soon as the problem was fixed.
But to be honest, it was a very stressful time for March17. Another challenge is to build a community that shares the same interests and values. As we have already understood, it takes time and patience. March17 is a relationship oriented brand, we are not focused on quick sales, for us it is important to know what our costumers think, what they like and we are very open to their suggestions as well. At this moment we are trying to get our brand out there using different channels and platforms, we would like that more people know about us and what we do. We’d like that they feel free to message us and just say ‘Hey, what’s up, how are you, guys, doing?’ “
When we inquired about some suggestions or advice that new entrepreneurs could benefit from, this is what was said.
“There will be many times when you feel like giving up but at those moments it’s important to remember why you started it in first place. It’s not easy, it’s not even close to “easy”, however it’s very rewarding; each and every obstacle that you manage to overcome, makes you appreciate your own efforts. It’s a “must” to love and be passionate about the business you decide to create.”
We were curious about the methods that captured the attention of the March17 audience best. Here, Liva endulges us with a few of strategies that have been affective thus far.
“We started with social media, like WeChat, Instagram and Facebook. But we came to realize that the strongest power is in the word of mouth. We’re sending and giving lots of March17 gifts to our friends and relatives, coworkers and potential customers. If they like our product, they will be happy to share our information with people around them, and so on. We like to participate in different fairs and markets, one is coming up very soon. It’s Christmas Winter Market in Futian, 80% of the profit will be directed to charity. So there are different ways we’re trying to get attention to our brand.”
In terms of impacting society, Liva opened up about the direction of the brand and expressed enthusiastically the choice they made to go environmental.“March 17 as a brand is focusing on eco-friendly materials and also how to leave a better world for our children. So we’re big fans of bamboo products. At this moment one of our favorite bamboo products are bamboo straws. “One straw at a time” – we believe this and are trying to bring awareness to our community and people everywhere. Our actions leave a much bigger influence and impact than we can even imagine. More March 17 bamboo products will be coming very soon.”
